Hart House

Lillian Massey Department of Household Science - 157 Bloor St. at Queen's Park (reader request)

Started in 1902 by Lillian Massey Treble, daughter of Hart Massey (after whom Hart House was named) the Faculty of Household Science included U of T's first women professors, principal Annie Laird and Clara Benson, one of the first women to receive a PhD from U of T.

Interior fittings of marble and oak were as fine as the well proportioned exterior of Indiana limestone. A gymnasium and swimming pool were included to serve women students, just as Hart House served the men. The building now houses a Club Monaco retail store and the offices of the provincial Ombudsman. The swimming pool is still there, hidden under a false floor.
